The ConTempo Quartet, founded in Bucharest in 1995, is made up of violinists Bogdan Sofei and Ingrid Nicola, violist Andreea Banciu, and cellist Adrian Mantu. Originally formed while the musicians were students, the ensemble later moved to Ireland in 2003, where they became Galway’s ensemble-in-residence and began a long-standing role in performance and education.
The quartet has won numerous international awards and built a reputation for dynamic, imaginative performances. They have toured widely, playing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, the Berliner Philharmonie, and Carnegie Hall, and have performed for figures such as Pope John Paul II and Nelson Mandela.
In addition to their international career, ConTempo is deeply committed to education and cultural outreach. They have delivered masterclasses, collaborated across genres, and performed complete Beethoven and Bartók cycles in Ireland. Their contributions to music and education were honored with honorary doctorates from the National University of Ireland, Galway.
