Neolektra is an innovative South African musical project led by violinist Naomi Tagg that merges strings with percussion, synthesizers, and electronics to create a sound reminiscent of cinematic and videogame scores. Rejecting traditional classical presentation, Neolektra debuted in 2017 on the main stage of the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown to widespread acclaim and near sell-out audiences.
With its debut album Birth of a Heroine, Neolektra made waves internationally. The music has been described as emotive, surreal, and powerfully cinematic, often likened to a live movie soundtrack. Naomi Tagg’s vision is to transport listeners on a journey that pushes the emotional and expressive boundaries of the violin while reimagining what classical instruments can achieve in a contemporary context.
Beyond studio recordings, Neolektra’s performances are visually and sonically immersive, blending dynamic lighting and stage design with dramatic string-driven arrangements. The act has appeared at major festivals and events, as well as live broadcasts, earning praise for its ability to deliver unforgettable and high-impact musical experiences that bridge classical tradition with modern innovation.
